A narrator in his twenties, himself a son of a modest Egyptian neighbourhood, decides to preserve the stories of the people around him. Foremost among them is Shehata, affectionately called Shehta when the neighbours approve of him and addressed more formally when they do not. The narrator deliberately steps outside the centre of the tale: his purpose is not to recount his own life, but to give the neighbourhood and its residents the space to tell theirs.
