This study examines the Geneva Conventions, additional protocols, and international mechanisms intended to protect people during armed conflict. Using Abyei, the disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan, as a central case, it considers how politics, identity, resources, and veto power weaken accountability. The discussion also extends to Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Libya while arguing for stronger enforcement and criminal responsibility.
