The First Sigh

About this book

Egyptian colloquial verse gives voice to affection, loss, and the search for belonging in this collection. Mohamed Hosny Maher draws on everyday scenes and inherited popular wisdom, moving between difficult memories, present struggles, and hopes for the future. A wanderer seeking an address and a lover hiding sorrow behind laughter express the tension between outward appearances and private pain. Longing and reproach sit alongside patience, while love remains a lasting presence even when separation has changed the lives it touched.
