Life and work
About Allan Pinkerton
Born in Glasgow, he moved to the United States in 1842 and initially worked as a cooper before entering investigative work and establishing the agency that bears his name. He also supported abolitionism. Books published under his name, including The Detective and the Somnambulist, presented accounts of investigations to a broad readership and helped popularize the figure of the private detective.
