Life and work
About Joseph Conrad
He spent many years at sea before making writing his principal occupation, drawing on maritime experience and travel to create his fictional worlds. His best-known works include Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo and The Secret Agent. His stories examine moral choices, loyalty, isolation and power, often exposing tensions between civilization’s self-image and the realities of violence and exploitation. His complex narrative methods made him an influential figure in the development of the modern English-language novel.
