Les lettres de Suzanne

About this book

In Condé-Smendou, a town weighed down by colonial rule, the return of the legendary Smendaoui unsettles powerful colonial families. Young Sergeant Charles Olivier finds his military loyalties challenged by his conscience. Brief letters from Suzanne Babel, a woman defying the silence of her surroundings, expose the contradictions of power and echo those who have exchanged fear for dignity. Yacine Boughazi brings together forbidden love, betrayal and a search for truth in a poetic historical narrative about a nation refusing to submit. This is the French-language edition, translated by Messaouda Guechi and Feiza Abass.
